Hi did you checked the latest version? If you have a 32 bit system or not enough memory this bug may appear.

Can't be the reason, I have 8GB DDR3-RAM and Windows XP Pro x64 SP2

Steam just made a ninja update on HWiNFO.dll, HWiNFO32.dll and HWiNFO64.dll
I hope it fix that prob but still fear to give a try ( x.x)
